Maria Siow

Executive Producer

With media experience spanning over two decades, Maria Siow began her journalism career with The Straits Times in Singapore where she covered the political beat, the first rookie in the history of the paper to do so.

In 1994, Maria joined the then Television Corporation of Singapore as a producer for Talking Point, a current affairs program, where she produced a wide range of local current affairs programs.

She then moved on to the political desk of the television’s news division, where she covered political news and major community issues. She was later placed on the regular press corps for overseas state visits by Singapore leaders.

Maria began her first overseas stint as Hong Kong correspondent in 1998. A year later when the Singapore-headquartered Channel NewsAsia (CNA) was set up, she was dispatched to Beijing as the pioneer China correspondent. She set up the Beijing office from scratch and covered China and the region extensively before being appointed China Bureau Chief.

After returning from a study sabbatical, Maria returned to CNA as East Asia Bureau Chief. She remains CNA’s only China Bureau Chief and East Asia Bureau Chief to date. She is among a selected few to have visited North Korea on regular reporting assignments.

Maria has specialized knowledge in Chinese foreign relations, international affairs and China’s public diplomacy. Maria graduated with a BA in political science and philosophy from the National University of Singapore. She also studied at the Graduate School of International Studies at South Korea’s Yonsei University, and obtained a Masters in International Public Policy and Practice at The George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs.
