Cornelis Vaandrager is a multi-skilled broadcast media professional. He currently works as a Line Producer at China Global Television Network, a position he’s held since May 2014. The job entails managing every element of a bulletin, from news to business, to sport. Cornelis also plays a role in news planning and field producing, which includes managing broadcast teams on location. His time as an assignments editor and subeditor at a South African broadcaster has allowed him to hone the diverse skills of the different staff in the newsroom and his own. In January 2016, Cornelis led a team to the African Union summit in Addis Ababa. He was chosen to play a similar role in the channel’s coverage of the great wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara later that year. Aside from television news, Cornelis also has a background in several postgraduate academic fields, from theatre and African history to creative writing. These skills provide him with a unique outlook when it comes to broadcast media. Cornelis has a long-standing passion for Africa and the stories of people on the continent, especially those who are changing the fortunes of their communities through innovation and strength of character. These are the stories that are often lost in the dominant narrative of Africa as a continent susceptible to great upheaval.
Telling those stories and telling them well is something Cornelis strives to achieve every day at CGTN.
