Super El Niño raises weather concerns as conservation gains emerge

A super El Niño event formed in September 2026, according to China's National Climate Center, prompting experts to call for stronger preparedness for extreme weather, abrupt transitions between drought and flooding, and unusual rainfall. CGTN examines the event's potential impacts in the coming months and into 2027, including the risk of extreme rainfall and regional disasters. Beyond the climate outlook, International Geodiversity Day highlights how Earth's non-living features support biodiversity, sustain human societies and help scientists assess natural hazards. On World Animal Day, official figures point to progress in China's wildlife conservation: more than 200 rare and endangered wildlife species have entered a phase of restorative growth, over 100 threatened plant species have received emergency protection, protected species coverage exceeds 80%, and overwintering waterbird numbers reached a record 5.059 million.
