China's national parks show what works

China's first five national parks, established in 2021, are proving fit for purpose. Covering 230,000 square kilometers, they protect nearly 30% of China's key terrestrial wildlife and plant species. Globally, the picture is worse. The UN's first assessment of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework says the world is off track for its 2030 targets, with gaps in financing, technical support and implementation. It calls for stronger action ahead of COP17. The threats are not slowing down. Hurricane Simon strengthened to Category 4 as it moved toward Mexico's western coast. Torrential rain has already flooded Acapulco.
